When I was still in art school, one of my instructors said that to succeed as a professional artist, I would have to pick a medium and concentrate on it. Being in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, it was difficult having all the exciting options without having to pick a major. ( I wondered then what a teacher like that was doing in a school like SAIC. ) Twelve years after graduating, I have finally figured out what she meant. Today, my art work is still a mix of different media. From collages of materials collected from daily life- scrap gift tissue, kiddie cup lids, bubble pack, even my children’s doodles- to traditional painting and drawing with one medium, my inspiration is the Jungian idea of the collective unconscious. Through the use of various materials, I tell the story of loss, humiliation, restriction as well as enlightenment, liberation, and contemplation. Through this mix, I embrace diversity in culture, faith, and philosophy. This is what makes me whole.
